Hammock Camping

Camping has long been a perfect pastime for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life for a day or two. There is nothing more relaxing than getting back to nature and taking the time to explore woodland trails and the best that Mother Nature has to offer, but that chill time can come with a bit of a hassle when searching for and setting up your camping space. Going with a tent means having to find a relatively clear, flat space in which to set up, which can mean severely limiting your options, or forcing you to pay for a spot in a campground where you are likely to find yourself surrounded by gas guzzling RV’s; hardly an escape from big city life.

Even when you do find a good spot to set up, there is still the struggle of trying to pitch the tent, a task that can be a major source of frustration for many, not to mention that even with the use of an inflatable air mattress, most tent sleepers will be in for an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Not only that, but if you are intending on going on an extended multiple day hike, then that means setting up and breaking down that tent every night, and hefting around a bulky, uncomfortable tent for the duration of your trip. No surprise then that hammock camping is becoming more and more popular among those who hike and camp on a regular basis.

A camping hammock may seem like an odd concept for those who imagine that a hammock is solely for lazing around in the backyard with a cold drink. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and the modern camping hammocks offer many advantages over the traditional form of tent camping. Many of them come in at under 2lbs, meaning that they are easy to carry, even on the steepest or roughest of terrains. They are designed to set up quickly and easily, and are constructed with webbing straps which protect the bark of the trees they are mounted on.

Most camping hammocks are designed to allow the user to sleep on their back or side, and with the feet elevated above the body, the possibility of swelling after a long day hiking becomes greatly reduced. The main selling point for most though is the ability to set up anywhere there are two trees close together, rather than scouting for an open area where a tent can be pitched. This means more time walking and admiring the scenery, than searching for possible campsites. You will also find that a hammock will have a longer life than a tent as it does not come into contact with the ground, which means it will not become soiled or dampened.

A quality camping hammock can be found for under $100, which really is a small price to pay for easy portability and a comfortable night’s sleep after a hard day on the hiking trails.

Conclusion:

If you're determined to go hammock camping, and want to tie up to trees in the forest. Take a look at the spear hammock. Very lightweight and can set up with two trees easily.
